NAADI (PULSE PERCEPTION)

There are three kinds of life forces in our body namely Vatham,Pitham and kabam. These are in fact three components of a single life force operating in our body. It is called as ‘Uyir thaathu’ in Tamil.Siddhars have found out a peculiar way of identifying this  subtle life force ( normally only spiritually sensible) through the palpation with fingers. The pulse in our body has got a representation  of  the mysterious life force which keeps the body alive. This secret was unraveled by the saintly Siddhars  and they have shown the ways and means to examine it.
Many factors in our body influence  these three humours and lot of changes are bound to occur in all these humors under such influences. Different kinds of variations and vitiations occur in them which in turn affect the udal thaathus which are seven in number. These variations while affecting the mind and body is said to result in disease. Therefore it will be expedient to sense the variations found in the naadi to diagnose the diseases afflicting the body.
Naadi can be perceived over the radial artery of the patients against the radial bone by the fingers of the examining physician. It directly the reports about the functioning of the heart and so it is more reliable than any other sign in the body.

Method of examination
The examiner’s index finger is placed over the anterior aspect of the radial bone 1 inch  from the wrist, the middle finger next and the ring finger thirdly to feel for the Naadi or pulse. A pulsatile expanding causes a heave over the arterial wall which is measured in units called ‘Wheat grain measure’ and this means the height of the heave in the artery corresponds to the length a wheat grain. The pulse felt by the index finger denotes the ‘Vaatham’ , the pulse felt by the middle finger indicates the ‘Pitham’ and that felt by the  ring finger indicates the ‘Kabam’. The normal pulse play or Naadinadai is said to be, one wheat grain expansible unit  for VAATHAM,  ½ wheat grain expansible unit for  PITTHAM and  ¼ wheat grain expansible unit for  KABAM.

Usually the Naadi nadai  is a combination of two humors. It could be by any two of the three humors vatham,Pitham and kabam. The combinations could be of the following orders,
1.Vaatha pitham
2.Vaathakabam
3.Pithavatham
4.Pithakabam
5.kabavatham
6.kabapitham.
Of the two humors, the first one is determined to  be  by  the exceeding of its normal wheat grain measure by more than twofold. The second humor is determined by the exceeding to its original limit but well within the double measure of its original. For instance, the pulse play ‘Vaathapitham’ indicates that the vaatham here is certainly of two wheatgrain measures and the pitham is more than half but within one grain measure .
